Bunker Archeology

The typology, the monolith and the aesthetics of disappearance.

Paul Virilio, a French urbanist and philosopher, traveled the Atlantic Wall in 1958 and reflected on those war buildings in his book Bunker Archeology. Both this book and the bunker itself are the guideline of Bunker Archeology. Today's artists explore the form and content of this building in their work. Just like archaeologists, they investigate the form and search for its meaning in a contemporary context. They try to explain their fascination for the bunker and translate it into new interpretations.
