Artwork in commission for "Huis van de Mens", Brugge

wood, carbord, paint, frames, text, tape glue

curator Jan Verhaeghe(here above) invited me to make a work of art for "Huis van de mens" in Brugge."Huis van de mens" is a humanistic organization and service center that is open to every person.the curator gave me the second article from the human being to translate this into a work of art.

Article 2:" Everyone is entitled to all rights and freedoms listed in this Statement, without any distinction of any kind, such as race, color, gender, language, religion, political or other belief, national or social origin, property, birth or other status . Furthermore, no distinction will be made according to the political, legal or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, irrespective of whether it is an independent, trust or non-self-governing area, or whether there is another limitation of sovereignty exists."

For this assignment I started to think about the language of law and people. We mainly know the business forms of text, such as this article. But the real language of people and the human rights  comes from the street from the protest and the directness of the language and its appearance.

That is why I also think that the language should be bottom up for this work. I went looking for the language of the demonstration. The analysis was that these panels are often made of household materials and they are also made of porous and temporary materials, cardboard, wood, old sheet ... I also noticed that these signs often have a personal power because they are written or painted by hand. The last step in this proces was the size and presentation to put the focus on the content of the article, by reducing the signs and framing them they get a iconic form, they embody the spirit of the protest marches, whit out beiing utile. The signs become active in the symbolic order and make us reflect on our rights.
